Rare and Unusual Plants

Hedgehog Aloe Vera
Hedgehog Aloe Vera

This easy to care for plant enjoys a bright and sunny location in your home, and will thrive if you can get it a few hours of direct sunshine a day.  Minimal watering is needed as the soil prefers to dry out, so it is very easy to maintain and can survive if you do a lot of traveling and still want the benefits of living green plants, without all the attention needed by many others. This is the hybrid “Hedgehog”, and has skinnier and spikier stems than your average aloe.

Dwarf Pomegranate
Dwarf Pomegranate

One my favorite plants, but not for the beginner, the hard-to-find dwarf pomegranate needs full direct sun on them to keep them happy.  Enthusiasts love them because they can be trained into bonsai trees, but for others, the fact that they drop their many little leaves every years is reason enough to stay away.  But if you have a green thumb, a sunny location. and can ensure they don’t dry out, the dwarf pomegranate (when available!), is well worth the effort.

Firestick Euphorbia
Firestick Euphorbia

This euphorbia is more commonly found in its plain green version.  This hybrid, the “firestick” turns a really nice shade of red when grown in full sun.  The plant can tolerate lower light levels but the result is the plant reverting to its all-green state.   It quickly turns red again once the light levels are increased.  Can grow rather large and unruly if not kept in check.

Jasmine Topiary

Although only available a certain times of the year, jasmine makes a great addition to any home that has a great deal of bright light, and has someone to look after it.  It grows much better outdoors in the summer, but many people have success keeping their indoor jasmine in bloom nearly to all year long.  Needs close attention paid to its watering as an indoor houseplant, but the reward of a little effort will be a glorious scent that fills the entire room, without being overpowering or pungent.   Usually available in different forms, such as bushes and trellis’, or as seen here in the double topiary form.

Shrimp Plant
Shrimp Plant

This unusual but spectacular Shrimp Plant is always an attention getter.  When available, this plant is perfectly suited for a bright sunny solarium, or a very sunny room.  This plant also loves to be outdoors for the summer.  It prefers as bright light as possible, and must get some direct sun.  Keep well watered, and fertilized during the growing season, and pinch back spent blooms to promote new growth.  For some, this plant can be a little tricky, for others, it can bloom almost all year round.
